ABOUT THE LIBRARY

Welcome to the Cape Girardeau Public Library’s website!

February 6, 2007.  What a momentous day in the history of the Cape Girardeau Public Library!  Thank you to all the voters who approved a tax increase to fund a wonderful Destination Library for all the citizens of Cape Girardeau.

October was a busy month for the library.  On October 9th we opened bids from three general contractors and awarded the new library construction project to Kiefner Bros. of Cape Girardeau.  The Library Board was thrilled to be able to hire a local contractor.  The library closed October 15 – 23 in order to move all library contents to a temporary location at 301 S. Broadview.  ( Moving off-site will allow construction to go on unimpeded and will save six months in construction time.)We opened for business at our temporary home on October 24th.  Except for a private meeting space, we are offering all the same services we were at 711 North Clark.

Over 70 library supporters attended our groundbreaking on Monday, November 5th. Click on “Library Expansion” on our home page to view some pictures of that momentous day.  If you have been by the Clark Street site you’ll notice that some major demolition has been performed. As construction continues to progress we will keep you updated via our blog and occasional news coverage.  In addition, feel free to stop by my office, or call, with any questions, any time!

I encourage you to register your e-mail account with our Circulation Staff.  You will receive overdue and hold notices more quickly than via snail mail.  In addition Youth Services and Adult Services staff will notify you of upcoming programs.

Even with the planning work of a new building, we continue to offer new services.  Check out our new downloadable videos via the link on our home page and our beginning collection of audiobook “Playaways” available for check out. We also now offer Wi-Fi access for those of you who carry your own laptop.

Please come visit us at our temporary home south of Applebee’s.

Happy Readings!
