VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

Cape Girardeau Public Library 573-334-5279

Ages 12+.  Volunteers work 1 - 4 hours per week, depending upon availability of work. 
Jobs include book displays, bulletin boards, folding, stapling, finding books, and assorted jobs to
help the youth services staff.                     

City of Cape Girardeau Parks & Recreation 573-335-5421  
Volunteer opportunities tend to be specific to events.  Several volunteer opportunities will be available over the course of the summer.

Habitat for Humanity 573-334-9634  
Contact:  The United Way.  Teens can participate in Habitat for Humanity projects.

Humane Society of Southeast Missouri 573-334-5837
Volunteers must be 16 or older and must complete an orientation before working.

Lutheran Home 573-335-0158

Summer Junior Volunteers ages 13 - 18 work with the Activities staff.  Call to request an         application to be mailed to you.  After completing an orientation, volunteers will be scheduled to
work 4 hour shifts (on specific days and at specific times).  Junior Volunteer assignments will  vary, but some examples include assisting with programs & parties, leading exercises,
transporting clients, visiting, reading, playing cards & games, and /or working on bulletin boards.

Mississippi Valley Therapeutic Horsemanship

Volunteers will work on Saturdays helping developmentally disabled children through
therapeutic horseback riding.  Volunteers will help by leading the horses or assisting the rider.

RSVP (Retired Senior Volunteer Program) 573-335-7555

Coordinates volunteers for United Way.  Current junior volunteer opportunities include visiting with nursing home patients (sorting and reading their mail to them, helping write letters, reading
books, and just talking or listening to them).

St. Francis Medical Center 573-331-3000

Ages 14+.  You may pick up an application or call to request that one be mailed to you. Complete the application and return prior to the sign-up/orientation date (check with the
hospital for closest date).  At this meeting, the hospital will try to coordinate your interests with positions available.  Volunteer assignments vary, but may include escorting patients for lab work and tests, office work, stuffing information packets, etc.

Safehouse 573-335-7745

Volunteers must be 18+.  Responsibilities include driving clients to job interviews,          appointments, etc.  Volunteers may also answer hotline calls.  Even if you are not old enough to
volunteer at the shelter, you may be able to help.  Consider collecting donations of items
needed at the safehouse.  You may call the shelter and get a wish list of items the shelter would
like to have donated.  (Collected donations cannot be delivered directly to the Safehouse, but
should instead be taken to Teen Challenge.)

Salvation Army 573-335-7000

Immediate volunteer opportunities include helping with meals, and working with Georgia on the
Sunbeam program (Thursday evening, 5:30 - 7:00, for girls in grades K - 5).

Southeast Missouri Hospital 573-651-5518

Ages 14 - 18.  Student or parent should call to request an application and to get on the mailing
list.  Check with the hospital for closest orientation dates.  Volunteer assignments vary (assist
on nursing floors, offices, bio med, labs, etc.), but there are limited opportunities to work with
children.  Generally, volunteers will work one 3 - 4 hour shift per week.
