Nothing Says ‘I Love You’ Like a Good Book: National Book Lovers Day!
August 8, 2021 – Kayla Thompson, Adult Services
Good afternoon our lovely Cape Girardeau patrons! As we bring the summer season to a close, and with it our wonderful summer reading program, it’s nice to see a day where we can stop and celebrate our love of reading and with it our objects of affection – books! August 9th is “National Book Lovers Day” and as librarians, we will take every chance that we can to celebrate and share our love of books, reading, and the joy the two bring into our lives!
Though the history of this holiday is shrouded in mystery, the reason and point of the unofficial holiday are not. If you have ever met a lover of books (aka a Bibliophile), or are a lover of books yourself, you know that it doesn’t take much to get us talking about our favorites and sharing them with others.
This year National Book Lovers Day is on a Monday. What better way to start the week?! So, how can we celebrate this wonderful time of the year? Easy!
First, if you want to be involved in bookish activities with other bookish people, join the Cape Girardeau Public Library’s book club Books on Tap. We meet on the first Tuesday of every month at Ebb & Flow from 7:00-8:30 pm. It’s a thematic book club so participants can read whatever genre they want as long as the book fits that month’s theme! You can join our Facebook page at “Books on Tap: a Social Book Club.”
Come into the library in person to check out a good book and learn about the many bookish resources available, as well as some of our programs for the upcoming months. We love seeing people come back into our facilities and our staff can recommend some great book choices if you are looking for something new! Ask us what our favorite book was this summer.
Visit a local bookstore. We have a Barnes and Noble in the area, but I also highly recommend visiting Cape’s local used bookstore, The Book Rack! This is one of my favorite haunts and I go to check them out when I am having a good day, a bad day, a birthday, a rainy day… Really I just go all the time. The staff is super friendly and fun and they always have something for me, even if it’s not what I was originally looking for. Plus they have fun book-related items like mugs, stickers, bookmarks, and even puzzles!
Gift a friend with a good book! Maybe one of your favorites? I always like to share titles such as The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller, Snow Flower and the Secret Fan by Lisa See, The Kiss Quotient by Helen Hoang, Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen, or Peter Pan by J.M. Barrie. I have many other favorites and my favorite thing ( right after adding new books to my “to be read” list) is recommending new books to others.
Take some time for yourself to just relax with a good book and get a few pages in. I can read just about anywhere at any time but I do have my preferred places. My first favorite place is on my front porch rocking chair. A few months ago I purchased it spur of the moment and I have not lived to regret it yet. It’s the perfect place to relax and read, rain or shine (though reading while listening to the rain is the best way in my opinion). My next favorite place is under the big tree in the middle of the park by River Campus. It’s such a nice place to spread a blanket out and sit with an iced coffee in one hand and a book in the other. It’s also a fun thing to do with friends on long lazy days! My last favorite place to sit and read is a little more out of the way. The Trail of Tears state park here in Cape has a lake (Lake Boutin) that has a little beach and a roped-off area for people to swim. On warm days where I want to get out of the house, I pack some lawn/camping chairs and find a place to stick my toes in the sand. It isn’t quite like being at the ocean but for a little while, I can pretend.
Read aloud. Sometimes you can do this with friends, family, and younger children, and in my case my dog. My dog loves when I read to him. I think he just likes the sound of my voice, but whatever the case may be, it is something that I enjoy doing with him.
