More than Just Books: National Library Week

March 30th, 2022 – Kayla Thompson, Adult Services

Happy Wednesday to all of our wonderful and lovely patrons! Next week is National Library Week. Now, I could go on about the history of this holiday or the history of libraries in general, but today, I want to talk about something a little more near and dear to our hearts – the Cape Girardeau Public Library!

Basic History:
The idea for a library here in Cape Girardeau was first organized by the Women’s Council of clubs in 1916 (a really cool detail as we come to the close of Women’s History Month) when the question was asked, “What is our community’s greatest need?”. Though the answer was almost completely unanimous, doors to the facility would not open for another five to six years as preparations went underway and complicated decisions were made. On June 15th, 1922 the library was officially opened to the public as a Carnegie Library. That being said, this year marks the 100th birthday of the Cape Girardeau Public Library as an institution! And you guys get to be a part of it! How awesome is that?!

One thing to look forward to as part of the celebration is Dr. Adam Criblez’s presentation on April 21st about the history of the Cape Girardeau Public Library. Join us from 6:00-7:30 pm in the Hirsch Community Rooms for some informational fun.

The library, any library, is more than just a building and it is more than just the books on the shelves. The library is an important part of the community–a place where patrons can come to explore both themselves and the world around them in a safe environment. A place where people can get answers to questions and help with their struggles.
