Volunteer Policy

Last Updated Date

Volunteer assistance is encouraged and appreciated by the Board of Trustees and the staff of the Library. The Library uses the services of volunteers to supplement the duties and activities of paid staff.

Organized volunteer groups who function in the service of the Library do so with the knowledge and approval of the Library Director.

Volunteers must be at least 13 years of age.

Volunteers may not work in the same department or be supervised by a family member, except for special events and/or with approval of the Director.

A volunteer information form will be completed for each prospective volunteer, and volunteers will be asked to provide references. Volunteers will be expected to complete an orientation prior to beginning their service. Orientations will be offered on a monthly basis (or as needed). Records of a volunteer’s assignment(s), performance, and service hours will be maintained in the department and shared with the volunteer as requested.

Volunteers must acknowledge an obligation to provide service within the guidelines and policies of the Library, including, but not limited to, patron confidentiality and privacy issues.

Volunteers who drive a vehicle as a part of their service with the Library will be required to provide a copy of their driver’s license to the Director.

Prospective volunteers will be subject to background checks prior to service. During their library service, volunteers will not be left alone with minor(s).

The Library reserves the right to dismiss a volunteer at any time.

Volunteer policy amended and approved November 29, 2012. Amended 6/30/2022.
