The Cape Girardeau Public Library is proud to announce that it has been awarded the prestigious Library of the Year Award by the Missouri Library Association. This honor recognizes the library’s outstanding service to the community, commitment to intellectual freedom, and dedication to expanding access to information and resources for all residents.

In honor of this achievement, the library will host an Open House Reception on Thursday, October 3rd from 4:00 to 7:00 PM. All are invited to join in the celebration, which will include a ribbon-cutting ceremony, library card signups, interactive activity stations, and light refreshments.

The past year has been transformative for the Cape Girardeau Public Library, with several key initiatives setting it apart as a leader in community engagement and resource accessibility. One of the library’s most notable achievements was joining Missouri Evergreen, a statewide resource-sharing consortium that connects libraries across Missouri. This integration has significantly expanded the library’s collection, offering patrons access to a wide range of educational and recreational materials from libraries throughout the state. By enhancing the library’s resources, Cape Girardeau residents can now explore a broader selection of books, media, and other materials that enrich their learning and leisure.

In addition to expanding its collection, the Cape Girardeau Public Library established a reciprocal borrowing agreement with Riverside Regional Library, allowing residents in both library districts to obtain library cards at the location of their choice. This partnership has improved accessibility to library services for residents across Cape Girardeau County, ensuring that everyone can benefit from the rich resources and programs offered by both libraries.

Throughout the year, the library also demonstrated its steadfast dedication to intellectual freedom and inclusivity. Despite facing multiple book challenges, the library has remained committed to providing access to diverse perspectives and upholding the community’s right to free expression. By fostering an environment where individuals feel welcomed and supported in exploring different viewpoints, the Cape Girardeau Public Library continues to be a vital hub for dialogue, learning, and community growth.

“We are incredibly honored to receive this award,” said library director Katie Earnhart. “Our team is passionate about serving the community and ensuring that everyone has the opportunity to access information, engage in lifelong learning, and discover new ideas. This recognition is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our staff, and we are proud to be a beacon of knowledge, inclusion, and innovation for Cape Girardeau.”

The Library of the Year Award highlights the Cape Girardeau Public Library’s unwavering commitment to providing outstanding service, promoting literacy, and advocating for intellectual freedom. As the library looks toward the future, it remains dedicated to finding new ways to meet the needs of the community and uphold the core values that make libraries essential pillars of society.
