Memory Matters! New STEM Kits for Adults

Posted on:

Back in March, the Cape Girardeau Public Library was awarded an LSTA grant by the Missouri State Library to fund the purchase of Memory  kits for adults with the focus of strengthening memory and cognitive functions. Through this grant the library was awarded $2,902.00 to cover the 14 kits to be added to the Library of Things collection.

Though they are good for all ages, these kits purchased from Penworthy are intended for seniors and others who might be experiencing memory loss or any other type of cognitive decline (Alzheimer's, Dementia, head injuries, etc.). Or anyone who might just be looking out for the future and strengthening their brain.

Very similar to the STEM kits we have in our Youth department, these kits combine games, puzzles, books, and various activities that can either be enjoyed individually or with friends and family. Each shared experience with the kits is meant to stimulate memories and conversations as well and encourage others to share and create new memories. My favorite kits have these matching games where you have to match the pet to its costumed counterpart. There is one with cats and one with dogs. It's adorable, fun, and good for the mind!

Each of the 14 Memory Kits has a different theme for patrons to enjoy including but not limited to:

History Buffs: World War II
Homemakers
Handyman
Gardening
The Great Outdoors
World Travelers
Exploring the Art World
Road Trips

and many others!

And as an added bonus, many of the topics and themes of the kits go along with our Summer Reading theme: "Adventure Begins at Your Library".  So come check out these new memory kits and let the adventures and good times roll! They have all been cataloged, are ready to be checked out, and can be found on the library's Library of Things page.

This project is supported by the Institute of Museum and Library Services under the provisions of the Library Services and Technology Act as administered by the Missouri State Library, a division of the Office of the Secretary of State.
