We love to celebrate our young readers! This year, help us celebrate National Young Readers Week - from November 15 through November 19! National Young Readers Week helps to highlight the importance of literacy and literature, and is the perfect time to ignite a passion for books in your little ones!
National Young Readers Week originated as something most of us Millennials will remember. Imagine you're once again in elementary school, receiving a personal pan pizza for meeting your reading goal. Sound familiar? Pizza Hut's BOOK IT! program is what kick started National Young Readers Week, but did you know it is still an ongoing program today? Parents and schools can follow Pizza Hut's BOOK IT! program, for more information, click here.
If you want to celebrate at the Cape Girardeau Public Library, you have TONS of options! Start each day by attending one of our beloved storytimes:
- Tuesdays @ 11:00 - Preschool Storytime (ages 3-5)
- Wednesdays @ 11:00 - Babybook (birth - 1)
- Thursdays @ 11:00 - Toddlertime (1-3)
Please note, ages are encouraged, not enforced. Try out all three and see which one fits you best! We also love seeing those older siblings enjoying our storytimes!
You could also check out some of our fabulous books to read at home! Here are some that we recommend:

Starfish by Lisa Fipps
Ever since she wore a whale swimsuit and made a big splash at her fifth birthday party, Ellie's been bullied about her weight. To cope, she tries to live by her list of Fat Girl Rules, which are all about not standing out. And she's found a haven in her swimming pool, where she feels weightless in a fat-obsessed world. In the water, she can stretch out like a starfish and take up all the space she wants. Ellie finds an ally in her new neighbor Catalina -- a girl who refreshingly doesn't judge -- and in her new therapist, a woman who knows how to laugh at the right things. With these good people buoying Ellie up, it's a lot easier to face the bullies and starfish in real life -- by unapologetically being her own fabulous self.
Roller Girl by Victoria Jamieson
"A graphic novel adventure about a girl who discovers roller derby right as she and her best friend are growing apart"
Bea Wolf by Zach Weinersmith

One day, these brave warriors find their fun cut short by their nefarious neighbor Grindle, who can no longer tolerate the sounds of mirth seeping into his joyless adult life. As the guardian of gloom lays siege to Treeheart, scores of kids suddenly find themselves transformed into pimply teenagers and sullen adults! The survivors of the onslaught cry out for a savior--a warrior whose will is unbreakable and whose appetite for mischief is unbounded. They call for Bea Wolf
