When I think of “adventure,” the first thing that comes to mind is travel. This summer we are offering a number of FREE travel-themed programs for adults, as well as some on-going travel-themed activities that you can enjoy throughout the summer.

If you are a fellow traveler, be sure to stop by the “Where Have You Been?” wall map in Adult Services to place a dot for each place you have visited in the U.S.A. Check back with us throughout the summer to see where fellow community members have traveled.

If you are an adventure reader, be sure to pick up an Adventure Book Bingo card. Bingo cards will be available in Adult Services beginning June 1st and all cards must be submitted by July 31st. All Adventure Book Bingo participants will receive a magnetic bookmark and be entered into a drawing for a special set of adventure-themed wooden bookmarks.

If you want to travel, but aren’t sure where to start, then be sure to sign up for our “Expert Travel Tips” series. This series is presented by travel experts at Elite Travel, Inc. There are five sessions: June 4, Traveling on a Budget; June 18, Safety Tips for Traveling; July 2, Updates on Real ID, Passports, and Visas; July 16, Top 5 American Road Trips; and July 30, Art Around the World. You can sign up for any and all sessions that interest you.

If you are interested in visiting any U.S. National Parks, be sure to register for our U.S. National Parks Virtual Tour on Thursday, June 20th. We will be watching 3-5 minute virtual tours of 18 U.S. National Parks. Popcorn will be available to snack on while we watch the tours.

If you’re getting ready to travel, then “Don’t Just Wing It!: Tips and Tales from TSA” is the perfect program for you. This program is on Wednesday, July 17th and is presented by TSA regional spokesperson, Mark Howell. Mark will share some tips on getting through airport security, answer security screening and PreCheck questions, and share some entertaining travel stories.

If you would like to learn how to take great vacation photos, then you don’t want to miss “Crop It Like It’s Hot.” Professor Emily Denliger from Southeast Missouri State University will lead this class on how to take great vacation photos with your smartphone. This event is on Monday, July 8th.

If you are creative, join us for our travel-themed crafts this summer! Join us for “Adult Coloring: A World of Adventures” on Monday, July 1st to color some fun scenes of world travel destinations, no registration required. Our Crafternoon class for June is “Stamped Travel Journals” on Saturday, June 8th. Participants will stamp plain journals with travel-themed stamps to customize them and will take their journal home to keep. Our Crafternoon class for July is “D.I.Y. Map Magnets” on Saturday, July 13th. Participants will cut out small sections of a Missouri map, use Mod Podge to paste them onto clear stones, and affix a magnet to the back with glue. Samples of all of our summer crafts can be seen in the Adult Services display window.
